What is the Wakeup Project?

The Wakeup Project is an initiative powered by the EUK Mamie Foundation, with the hope that the Western World may wake up—through first hand testimonies—to the harsh reality of the persecution that many of our brothers and sisters in the world suffer in such distinct ways for defending their faith in Jesus Christ.

What is its purpose?

Through mass media, social networks and simple initiatives, which can be prepared in any group of catechism or evangelization, The Wake up Project seeks to spread the truth about persecution of the Christian Faith in the world, to give voice to the testimony of so many souls that fight day to day for their faith, and to move hearts to live the communion of saints intensely and courageously to sustain each other in the Mystical Body of Christ.

How did it start?

After becoming familiar with the situation of the Church in the world and the realities of persecution through different Catholic information sources- so blurred out in the western media- HM Television began to broadcast the “Information Block” and the “Weekly Newscast,” reporting the most relevant current events in the world.

Led by the love of the Truth, as Catholics and evangelizers, we felt called to respond to the needs of the Church and Benedict XVI’s call to all Christians in 2010 to defend and make the voice heard of so many who suffer unjustly and violently for their faith in Christ.

“At present, Christians are the religious group which suffers most from persecution on account of its faith. Sadly, the year now ending has again been marked by persecution, discrimination, terrible acts of violence and religious intolerance. This situation is unacceptable, since it represents an insult to God and to human dignity; furthermore, it is a threat to security and peace, and an obstacle to the achievement of authentic and integral human development. To deny or arbitrarily restrict this freedom is to foster a reductive vision of the human person; to eclipse the public role of religion is to create a society which is unjust, inasmuch as it fails to take account of the true nature of the human person”
(MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE BENEDICT XVI FOR THE CELEBRATION OF THE WORLD DAY OF PEACE, JANUARY 1, 2011).

Led by this love for our brothers and sisters, we started to produce documentaries like “A People Set Apart, The Persecuted Church,” “The Jasper Wall: The Persecuted Church II,” “The time to harvest.” But we felt that the Church was asking us for more.

On December 26, 2012, during the celebration of the Angelus on the feast of Saint Stephen, Pope Benedict XVI asked for the support and encouragement of persecuted Christians in the world. It was the day following an attack made against the Church in Nigeria: “St. Stephen is a model for all who wish to put themselves at the service of the new evangelization… Like him, may we be blessed by God’s grace to have the courage to speak up and to defend the truth of our faith in public, with charity and constancy.”

From EUK Mamie, we feel especially called to respond in a concrete and more committed way to this call. Once we determined to do so, Divine Providence set up what we call today “The Wakeup Project.” It is available in several languages thanks to the support of volunteers that have responded to this mission to evangelize in a totally generous and free way out of love for their persecuted brothers and sisters.
